"Redbacks under the outdoor furniture and pot plants"
Redbacks build messy webs in dry, sheltered spots close to the ground. Females guard several egg sacs at a time, so numbers grow quickly.

Funnel-webs are common in Meadowbank gardens near bushland, especially after rain, and huntsmen and black house spiders are regular visitors across the Ryde region. If you have found one, here is what to do first.
Bitten by a big black spider?
Treat it as a funnel-web bite. Call 000, keep the person still, and apply a firm pressure bandage over the bite and along the whole limb, then splint it. For a redback bite, use a cold pack and no bandage, and call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26.
Keep children and pets away from the spot
Especially sheds, play equipment, pot plants and outdoor furniture, where redbacks nest.
Do not reach into dark corners bare-handed
Wear gloves and shoes in the garden, shed and subfloor, and shake out shoes, boots and towels left outside or on the floor.
Leave the web where it is for now
Webs and egg sacs show the technician where spiders are living. Knocking them down first makes the nests harder to find.
Take a photo if it is safe
It helps us identify the species and tell you whether it is one to worry about.

Which spider you are seeing, and where, decides how the property is treated. Find yours below.
Redbacks build messy webs in dry, sheltered spots close to the ground. Females guard several egg sacs at a time, so numbers grow quickly.
White-tails do not build webs. They wander at night hunting other spiders, and hide in bedding, towels and clothes left on the floor.
Huntsman spiders are large, fast and startling, but shy and rarely bite. They come inside ahead of rain and in summer heat.
Black house spiders build funnel-shaped webs around window frames, eaves, lights and fences. The webs trap dirt and keep coming back.
Stored boxes, woodpiles and tools left undisturbed for months are ideal shelter for redbacks, black house spiders and daddy long-legs.
Male Sydney funnel-webs wander in summer and autumn, often after rain, and end up in pools, garages and shoes left outside. They can survive for hours underwater, so never scoop one out by hand.
The big spider that frightens people most in Sydney is usually a harmless huntsman. The one to worry about looks quite different. Here is how the two compare.
| Sydney funnel-web | Huntsman | |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Glossy black, solid body 2 to 5 cm long, large fangs pointing straight down | Large, flat and grey-brown, with legs up to 15 cm across |
| Web | A burrow lined with silk, with trip-lines at the entrance | No web. Hunts on walls and tree trunks |
| Where you find it | Moist ground under rocks, logs and houses; males in pools, garages and shoes | Behind curtains, on ceilings, in cars and under bark |
| Behaviour | Rears up and strikes when cornered | Runs fast when disturbed. Rarely bites |
| Bite | A medical emergency. Call 000 and apply a pressure bandage | Mild local pain that soon settles |
| Peak in Sydney | Males wander from November to April, especially after rain | Spring and summer, and before rain |
Spiders follow their food. If you also have insects around the house, see our cockroach control and ant control services in Sydney. Not sure what spider you have? Send us a photo from a safe distance.
Funnel-webs are common in Ryde region gardens near bushland, especially after rain. Huntsmen and black house spiders are also regular visitors.
The Sydney funnel-web lives in moist, shaded ground across the Sydney region, and is most common on the North Shore, the Northern Beaches, in the Hills District and around bushland. Rockeries, garden edging, leaf litter and the damp soil under houses all suit its burrows.
From November to April male funnel-webs leave their burrows to look for a mate, most often on humid nights after rain. That is when they end up in garages, laundries, shoes and swimming pools.
Redbacks nest under outdoor furniture, pot plants and play equipment across the whole city, and black house spiders build around eaves and windows where outdoor lights attract insects every night.
Demand builds through spring and peaks in summer and early autumn, when male funnel-webs are wandering and redback numbers are at their highest.
A few spiders are part of any garden. A house covered in webs, or redbacks where children play, is a different matter.
A funnel-web bite is a medical emergency, although no deaths have been recorded since antivenom was introduced in 1981. Redback bites cause intense pain and illness. Most bites happen when a hand or foot goes somewhere it cannot see.
One redback female can produce several egg sacs in a season, each holding hundreds of eggs. One web in spring can be dozens by late summer.
Lots of spiders means lots of insects to eat. White-tails in particular hunt black house spiders, so they follow a web problem indoors.
Webs across eaves, windows and fences collect dust and insect remains, mark render and paint, and come back within weeks if the spiders are not treated.
The goal is simple: treat where spiders live, clear the webs and reduce what they feed on. Our technicians explain each step and the price before they start.
Two kinds of spider, two treatments
Webbing spiders such as redbacks and black house spiders stay put, so we treat their webs and hiding spots directly. Hunting spiders such as white-tails and huntsman roam, so the treatment targets the cracks and voids they shelter in, and the insects and spiders they feed on.
Call and describe the spiders
What they look like, where you see them and roughly how many.
Same day inspection
A technician checks eaves, fences, sheds, the subfloor and inside rooms to identify the species and the breeding sites.
Upfront price
You get the price before anything starts, including any follow-up visit. No hidden charges.
Treatment inside and out
Eaves, window frames, fences, sheds and outdoor furniture are treated, with dust in the roof void and subfloor and a spray to skirtings inside where needed.
Webs removed
Once the treatment has had time to work, webs and egg sacs are brushed down so you can see that they are not rebuilt.
The price depends on the size of the property and how much of it needs treating. A unit with a small courtyard is the quickest job. A large two-storey home with sheds, long fence lines and a subfloor takes the most work. These are the things that set the price:
Size of the home. Single or double storey, and the length of the eaves.
Inside, outside or both. An external treatment, or a full internal and external one.
Sheds and outdoor areas. Garages, fences, decks and play equipment.
Web removal. How much webbing there is to clear.
You get an upfront price with no hidden charges after the technician has seen the job. Call 07 3544 9883 or send a photo with your enquiry for a faster estimate.

The Sydney funnel-web is the most dangerous, and its bite is a medical emergency. The redback comes second: its bite is painful and can cause illness. Antivenom is available for both. White-tail bites are painful, but research has not linked them to the skin ulcers they are often blamed for. Huntsman, black house and daddy long-legs spiders are low risk.
It depends on the size of the home, whether the treatment is inside, outside or both, and how many sheds, fences and outdoor areas are included. A technician gives you an upfront price before any work starts, with no hidden costs.
Webbing spiders such as redbacks and black house spiders are usually controlled for several months, and many households book a treatment once a year in spring. Hunting spiders can wander in from outside, so the occasional huntsman is still possible.
The evidence says no. An Australian study of confirmed white-tail bites found pain, redness and itching, but none of the flesh-eating ulcers often reported. Still, see a doctor about any bite that does not settle.
Not really. Huntsman spiders are large and fast, which is alarming, but they are timid and rarely bite. A bite causes mild local pain. They also eat cockroaches and other insects.
Treatments are planned around your household. People and pets stay off treated surfaces until they are dry, usually a couple of hours, and fish ponds and pet bowls are covered or avoided. Your technician explains exactly what to do before starting.
Because the food is there. Eaves, window frames and outdoor lights attract insects every night. Treating those surfaces, removing the webs and switching to warm-coloured outdoor globes all help.
Early spring, before egg sacs hatch and numbers build over summer. Treatments can be done at any time of year, and a redback problem is worth treating as soon as you find it.
Yes. We offer same day service across 428 Sydney suburbs, and for urgent jobs a technician can often be onsite in 60 minutes. Our phones are answered 24/7.
Call 000 straight away. Keep the person still, apply a firm pressure bandage over the bite and along the whole limb, and splint it. Do not let them walk. For a redback bite the first aid is different: a cold pack, no bandage, and a call to the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26.
